Summary
This report was written as part of the review stage of an EC-funded cross-border pilot project which aimed to produce management models for two beaches, one in Northern Ireland and one in the Republic of Ireland. These models would subsequently provide templates for other sites. The report deals with the environmental aspects of the pilot models. It discusses the environmental implications of current strategies, but emphasises the influence of past management practices. The report also discusses the wider strategic aspects of beach management at the regional scale, for example the possibility that there should be a continuum of management ranging, for example, from explicit conservation models at pristine sites to mass market tourism at traditional resorts.
