Summary
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a major opportunity to improve the whole water environment and promote the sustainable use of water for the benefit of people and wildlife alike. A key piece of European legislation, the WFD rewrites existing water legislation into a new overarching programme to deliver long-term protection of the water environment and improve the quality of all waters – groundwaters and surface waters – and associated wetlands.
