Summary

In County Derry, Northern Ireland a local authority, Limavady Borough Council, erected a sand fence at Benone beach in 2001. The site is an ASSI and SAC and in 2003 the statutory conservation authority requested the removal of the fence because it interfered with the operation of natural processes. This study examined the history of shoreline change at the site and concluded that the shoreline was historically stable. Since there was no geomorphological justification for the fence it was concluded that the current, and earlier sand fences had been erected essentially as visitor control devices. The report outlined the options open to the local authority.
