Summary
The Working Group on Fisheries Systems of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has identified the production and the use of knowledge in policy and management decision-making as one key process to be analysed in the evaluation of the performance of fisheries systems. This paper analyses how knowledge claims are articulated in public debates, taking the management of North Sea cod fisheries as a case study. It is part of the European funded PKFM project (“Policy and Knowledge in Fisheries Management‿), which involves research teams from Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, The United Kingdom and France. The country teams of the project have conducted national studies of public debates. On this base, this paper aims at identifying the main discourse patterns of public debates and understanding the construction and rationale of arguments that build these “conversations‿.
