Summary
We have a major role to protect and improve the number of fish in inland and coastal waters. We are the regulator for Sea Fisheries in more than 70 estuaries in England and Wales, and protect migratory salmonids and eels for up to six nautical miles. This is our strategy. Through effective regulation and investment by water companies, we have improved the water quality of many of our previously polluted rivers and waterways. More rivers now have healthy fish populations. Implementing the Water Framework Directive should continue this good work because waters need to be good quality. The Water Framework Directive also gives us the legislation we need to tackle problems and make the most of opportunities in water and wetland habitats. We are the ‘Competent Authority’ for making sure the Directive is carried out across England and Wales. We will continue to provide advice and support to Governments on the status of fish stocks, how international measures are being carried out, and reporting to the European Commission and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
