Summary

The objectives of the work are to review and investigate the possibilities for further development of NEG Micon's existing power control algorithm. The review encompasses the company's offshore designs of wind turbines, which are of the pitch-regulated variable-speed type. The installation of turbines in offshore wind farms provides a number of areas where turbine cost and performance improvements can be made via innovative turbine control strategies. Such improvements are important if the cost of energy from wind plant off the UK coast is to be reduced. It is believed that more advanced algorithms will be able to deliver substantial reductions in loads on, and hence reductions in costs of, major components.
